Who they were

The son of Túpac Inca Yupanqui, Huayna Capac campaigned in the north and pushed the empire’s frontier into what is now Ecuador and Colombia. He spent much of his reign in the northern city of Quito.

What they did

He ruled a realm of perhaps ten million people, consolidating Inca administration and building projects across the Andes. He fathered the rival heirs Atahualpa and Huáscar.

Legacy

Huayna Capac died suddenly, probably of an Old World epidemic that arrived ahead of the Spanish. His death without a clear succession sparked the ruinous Inca civil war.
