Overview
The Barron River is dammed upstream for hydroelectricity, so outside the wet season much of the flow is diverted and the falls run thin. From January to March the river usually overwhelms the diversion and the gorge fills with spray. The Djabugay people know the falls as Din Din, and interpretive signage at the lookouts gives their account of the place.
Highlights
The Barron Falls Skyrail station puts you at the edge of the gorge, and the Edge Lookout boardwalk added in 2020 is the closest safe view. The Kuranda Scenic Railway stops at Barron Falls station on the way up. Go after heavy rain if you can — the difference between seasons is not subtle.
