Overview
Rhodes was a great power of the ancient Aegean, home once to the Colossus, and later the stronghold of the Knights of St John, who walled its old town in stone. That medieval city, still lived in behind its gates and moat, is a World Heritage site, while the rest of the island offers beaches, hill villages and classical ruins. The climate is dry and sunny, and the island is large enough to reward a car and a few days.

The walled Old Town of Rhodes is a maze of Knights-era streets, gates and the restored Palace of the Grand Master. Down the east coast, the whitewashed village of Lindos climbs to an ancient acropolis above a turquoise bay. The beaches of the sheltered east coast, the valley of the butterflies and the old spa town of Kallithea fill out an island stay.
