Overview
Set where the city meets the warm Atlantic, Miami is really two places — the mainland city and the barrier island of Miami Beach across the bay — bound together by a subtropical climate and a strong Latin American character. Half of its people speak Spanish, and its food, music and street life owe as much to Cuba and the Caribbean as to the rest of the States. It is a city for the beach and the nightlife, with the wetlands of the Everglades and the island chain of the Keys within reach.
Highlights
South Beach lines the ocean with pastel Art Deco hotels along Ocean Drive, and the sands and nightlife are the main draw. Little Havana keeps the city’s Cuban heart, with cafés, cigars and music on Calle Ocho, and the Wynwood walls show off its street art. Day trips reach the Everglades National Park and the drive south to Key West along the ocean highway.
