Overview
Legend has it built to pin down a monster whose head was in India, body in Vietnam and tail in Japan, and the statues of dogs at one end and monkeys at the other mark the years its construction began and ended. It is the only covered bridge known to have a temple built into it, and it appears on the 20,000 dong note. A full restoration finished in 2024 drew criticism for how new the result looks — the timber and tiles are largely replaced.
Highlights
Crossing it needs the old-town ticket; looking at it from either bank is free and is most of the experience. Early morning avoids both crowds and the harsh light on the west face. The restoration is recent, so photographs older than 2024 will not match what you see.
