Wash a silicone baking mat in hot, soapy water after each use, scrubbing gently with a soft sponge or brush — never an abrasive pad, which damages the surface. For the greasy, sticky film that builds up over time, soak it in hot water with baking soda (or scrub with a baking-soda paste), then rinse and dry it fully before storing flat.
Recommended Hot soapy water after each use; a baking-soda soak for greasy film, then dry fully and store flat — Silicone baking mats are non-stick, but oils and baked-on residue slowly leave a tacky, sometimes smelly film, so they need a proper wash rather than a quick wipe. After each use, let the mat cool, then wash it in hot soapy water on both sides with a soft sponge or dish brush, working into the corners, and rinse well; most mats are dishwasher-safe too, ideally on the top rack. The sticky greasy film that develops over time is the main complaint, and the fix is baking soda: soak the mat in a sink of hot water with a few tablespoons of baking soda for 20–30 minutes, or spread a thick baking-soda-and-water paste over it, leave it, then scrub and rinse. For lingering smells, a soak with a splash of lemon juice or white vinegar helps, and a short bake in a low oven can drive off odours. Never use steel wool, scouring pads or knives on it, which scratch the silicone and ruin the non-stick surface. The most important finish is drying: dry it completely and store it flat or loosely rolled, because trapping moisture is what leads to a musty smell.
