Fill the infuser only a third to half full with loose leaf so the leaves have room to swell, lower it into water at the right temperature for that tea, steep for the recommended time, then lift it out so it doesn't keep brewing. Roomy leaves and pulling the infuser at the right moment are what separate a full-flavored cup from a weak or bitter one.
Recommended Loosely fill a third to half full, steep at the right temperature, then lift the infuser out on time — A tea infuser is just a basket that lets loose leaves expand in the water and then lets you remove them, so the two things that matter are room and timing. Add loose leaf to fill the basket only a third to a half — dry leaves swell to two or three times their size, and a cramped ball of leaves can't unfurl, which is the usual reason a tea infuser brews weak tea. Use roughly a teaspoon per cup, set the infuser in the mug or pot, and pour over water at the right temperature for the leaf: near-boiling (around 95°C) for black and herbal, cooler (around 80°C) for green so it doesn't turn bitter. Let it steep for the leaf's time — about 2–3 minutes for green, 3–5 for black — then lift the infuser out and set it on a saucer; leaving it in keeps extracting and turns the cup astringent. Choose a roomy basket-style infuser over a tiny mesh ball for the same reason, give the water contact with the leaves, and you can usually re-steep good loose leaf a second time. Rinse the mesh right after so tannins don't dry on and stain it.
