Glass for anything you store long, want to see, or that stains and smells — a gasketed glass jar seals airtight, never holds odor, and looks the part, at the cost of weight and breakability. Plastic for bulk, high shelves handled often, and anything you shake or drop, since it is light and won't shatter.

Use glass for display jars and anything oily or aromatic; use plastic for bulk staples and anything that travels or gets dropped.
