Step, Sensor, or Swing: Which Kitchen Trash Can?

A step (pedal) can for most kitchens — it opens hands-free, seals odor and pets out when closed, costs little, and has nothing to break or charge. A motion-sensor can is a pleasant upgrade if you keep it powered; a swing-lid or open can is cheapest but lets smells and pets straight in.

A foot pedal wins on reliability: greasy hands never touch it, the lid stays sealed between uses, and there is no motor, battery, or sensor to fail — just a body that lasts years. A motion sensor is genuinely nicer to use and just as sealed, but only if you accept batteries or recharging and the odd false open as you pass by. Swing-lid and fully open cans are cheapest and fine for dry waste, but in a kitchen they leak smell and invite pets and flies. Whatever the lid, size it right — a 45 L (12-13 gallon) liner is the kitchen standard — and pick a removable inner bucket for cleaning.
