Overview
Golden Summer, Eaglemont is a landscape painted in 1889 by the Heidelberg School artist Arthur Streeton at an open-air artists’ camp at Eaglemont near Melbourne.
Description
Dry grassland and hills lie under the strong summer light, and the whole canvas glows gold. It was praised for capturing the bright, dry light peculiar to Australia, unlike that of European painting.
History and legacy
The work drew notice as one of the first paintings by an Australian artist to be hung at the Royal Academy in London. It is today held by the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra.
