Who they were
Born into a Jewish immigrant family, Monash worked as a civil engineer before taking up military service. He gained experience at Gallipoli and on the Western Front and in 1918 became commander of the Australian Corps.
What they did
He used modern tactics that closely coordinated infantry, tanks, artillery, and aircraft. The Battle of Hamel of July 1918 is regarded as a model of this and helped the Allied offensives that followed.
Legacy
After the war he directed electricity development in Victoria and served public works. Monash is regarded as one of the ablest soldiers Australia has produced, and a university bears his name.
