Overview
Oracle bone inscriptions come from the late Shang capital Yin, near modern Anyang — the source of the dynasty’s alternative name, Yin. The king list reconstructed from the oracle bones closely matches the later account in the Shiji.
Key developments
Bronze casting reached a high level of development. Shang kingship was closely tied to ancestor worship and divination.
End and transition
The last king, Zhou (紂), was defeated by King Wu of Zhou at the Battle of Muye (c. 1046 BC), and the Zhou dynasty succeeded the Shang.
