What it was
Joseon’s royal Confucian academy, established in the new capital Hanyang in 1398; its institutional roots reach back to Goryeo’s national academy. It housed the Munmyo shrine to Confucius, where the Seokjeon ritual ceremonies are still performed.
Role
As the kingdom’s highest school, it prepared yangban scholars for the gwageo civil examinations and stood at the heart of Joseon’s Neo-Confucian state for five centuries. Its dormitory life, its curriculum of the classics, and its students’ remonstrances made it both a school and a political voice.
Fate
With the abolition of the examinations in 1894 and the end of the dynasty, it lost its state role. Today’s Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul claims its lineage, and the historic compound, with its ancient ginkgo trees, still hosts the Confucian rites.
