Who they were

He became ruler in 1520 as smallpox and the Spanish siege devastated Tenochtitlan. He directed the desperate defense of the capital until its fall in August 1521.

What they did

Captured as the city fell, Cuauhtémoc was held by Cortés and, according to tradition, tortured to reveal Aztec gold. He was executed during an expedition to Honduras in 1525.

Legacy

Cuauhtémoc became a lasting symbol of Indigenous resistance and Mexican national identity. Monuments and place names across Mexico honor him today.
