Who they were
Born to a wealthy Venezuelan family and inspired by Enlightenment ideals, Bolívar led long military campaigns from 1810 onward. He liberated Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and the country later named Bolivia in his honor.
What they did
He briefly united several territories in the republic of Gran Colombia and dreamed of a federation of Spanish American states. His victories at Boyacá, Carabobo, and Junín were decisive.
Legacy
Bolívar’s dream of unity fractured into separate nations, and he died disillusioned in 1830. He remains the towering national hero of much of South America.
