Calton Hill

Calton Hill is the low hill at the east end of Princes Street covered in Greek-revival monuments, from which the standard photograph of Edinburgh is taken. It is a ten-minute climb and free.

Overview

The buildings on top are why the city was called the Athens of the North, and the largest of them, the National Monument, is an unfinished Parthenon abandoned in 1829 when the money ran out — locals called it Edinburgh’s Disgrace and then grew fond of it. The Nelson Monument beside it drops a time ball at one o’clock, matched to the gun fired from the castle so ships in Leith could set their chronometers. The view takes in the castle, the Old Town ridge, Arthur’s Seat and the Firth of Forth at once.

Highlights

Sunset is the slot, with the castle backlit and the Old Town in silhouette. The path from Waterloo Place is stepped and the easiest way up. The Nelson Monument charges a small fee to climb and adds surprisingly little to the view.
