What it was
The union brought together the territories of modern Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama under a single government. It was Bolívar’s attempt to build a strong, unified Spanish American state.
Role
Gran Colombia was central to the final campaigns of independence and to Bolívar’s dream of continental unity. Deep regional rivalries and disputes over how to govern soon strained it.
Fate
By 1831, Venezuela and Ecuador had seceded and the union dissolved into separate republics. Its collapse marked the failure of Bolívar’s vision of a united Spanish America.
