Overview
Jørn Utzon won the 1957 design competition with a sketch of interlocking shells; the engineering took sixteen years and ten times the original budget. The roof is clad in a million glazed tiles that shift from white to cream as the light moves. Inside are a concert hall, an opera theatre, drama theatres and a studio, wrapped by a public podium that anyone can walk.
Highlights
A one-hour guided tour takes you inside the halls, and a performance is the better way to see them used. The forecourt steps and the Opera Bar at water level give the classic view back to the Harbour Bridge, best in the late afternoon. Circular Quay ferries pass close enough for a free photograph of the sails from the water.
