Overview
Sydney grew from the 1788 colonial settlement at Sydney Cove into a city of more than five million spread around a deep, island-studded harbour. Life bends toward the water: commuters cross it by ferry, the old warehouse quarter of The Rocks sits at its edge, and headland walks link one sandstone cove to the next. The climate is mild and sunny for most of the year, and the harbour is the reference point from which the whole city reads.
