Overview
The domes are conglomerate — pebbles and boulders cemented together — while Uluru is sandstone, which is why they weather into rounded forms rather than a single wall. Mount Olga, the tallest, reaches 546 metres above the plain, some 200 metres higher than Uluru. Because the site is sacred, only two walks are open and much of the area cannot be entered or photographed in detail.
Highlights
The Valley of the Winds walk is the serious one: 7.4 kilometres of rock and creek bed, closed above 36 degrees, usually by 11am in summer. Walpa Gorge is the short alternative, 2.6 kilometres between two of the highest domes. The dune viewing area on the road in gives the whole group at sunrise, which is when the colour holds longest.
