Yulara

Yulara is the purpose-built town 18 kilometres from Uluru that houses every bed, shop and fuel pump in the area. Nobody stays inside the national park, so almost every visit runs through here.

Overview

The town was built in the early 1980s to move accommodation off the base of the rock, and it holds about a thousand residents plus visitors. Ayers Rock Resort operates the hotels, campground, supermarket and the shuttle that loops the town and the park entrance. Free evening activities — bush yarn talks, guided garden walks, a nightly bush food demonstration — run at the town square.

Highlights

The Wintjiri Arts and Museum and the Maruku Arts working studio show Anangu artists at work, with sales going back to the communities. The town’s dune viewing platform gives a free sunset over Uluru and Kata Tjuta without joining a tour. Buy fuel and groceries here — the next town is 200 kilometres away.
