Overview
The Komodo National Park spreads across Komodo, Rinca and a scatter of smaller islands between Sumbawa and Flores, a landscape of tawny savanna hills falling to a turquoise sea. The dragons, giant monitor lizards found nowhere else, are the reason most people come, but the waters around the park are among the best in Indonesia for diving. Access is by boat from the town of Labuan Bajo on Flores, on day trips or on liveaboard cruises.
Highlights
Guided walks on Komodo and Rinca islands track the dragons in the wild, alongside deer, wild boar and birdlife. The viewpoint on Padar Island looks over three curving bays and is the park’s signature climb, and the Pink Beach takes its colour from red coral in the sand. Below the surface, manta rays and reef fish draw snorkellers and divers to the channels between the islands.
