Overview
A limestone island rising steeply from the sea off the Sorrento peninsula, Capri has drawn visitors since Roman emperors built their villas here. The little town of Capri, with its famous piazzetta, sits above the harbour of Marina Grande, while quieter Anacapri climbs the slopes toward Monte Solaro. It is small, steep and busy in summer, and its pleasures are the sea, the walks and the views as much as the shopping and cafes.
Highlights
The Blue Grotto, a sea cave lit an electric blue from below, is reached by small boat, and a boat tour circles the island past the Faraglioni stacks. The Gardens of Augustus look out over the cliffs and the sea, and a chairlift climbs Monte Solaro for the island’s widest view. The piazzetta of Capri town and the lanes of Anacapri fill the hours between.
