The main city and airport of the Costa del Sol, Malaga long served as the way in to the beach resorts, but a wave of new museums and a smartened old town have made it a destination in itself. It has a warm, easy climate almost year round, a walkable old centre below the hilltop Alcazaba, and a working port turned over to promenades and restaurants. Picasso was born here, and the city trades on its art, its beaches and its fried-fish and wine traditions.
