Overview
Under the shave-and-change-dress edict, Han men took the braided queue, the long changpao gown and the magua jacket with distinctive horse-hoof cuffs. Officials kept rank badges and the dragon robe. Manchu (Banner) women wore a long one-piece gown with high platform shoes and an elaborate headdress, while Han women largely kept the jacket-and-skirt.
Key garments and style
The Manchu Banner gown was the direct ancestor of the qipao (cheongsam) of the following century.
Transition
The 1911 revolution swept away court dress and opened an age of rapid change.
