What it was

Founded in the 8th century under Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, it originally gathered talented scholars to draft documents for the emperor. Over the dynasties it became the pinnacle of the examination world: in Ming and Qing times only the very top graduates of the palace examination entered it.

Role

Its scholars drafted edicts, compiled official histories and great collections — they worked on the Yongle Encyclopedia — and tutored emperors and princes.

Fate

Its Beijing premises burned during the Boxer siege of 1900, destroying much of the Yongle Encyclopedia manuscript, and the academy was abolished in 1911 with the end of the Qing. It remains the archetype of scholar-official prestige: “entering the Hanlin” was the exam system’s highest honor.
