Overview
The site has paved streets, drainage and houses standing two and three storeys high, with door and window frames preserved as voids in the ash. Its wall paintings — fishermen, antelopes, a fleet at sea — are in Athens and in the Museum of Prehistoric Thera at Fira. The eruption that sealed it was one of the largest in human history and is often linked, cautiously, to the Atlantis story.
Highlights
Walk the raised walkways slowly; the drainage channels and the pot stores in situ are what make the town legible. Go in the middle of the day — it is roofed and cool, which reverses the usual advice on Santorini. See the Fira museum before or after, since the paintings and the walls belong together.
