Overview
Home to more than twenty million across its valley, Mexico City sits at over two thousand metres, ringed by mountains and volcanoes. Its historic centre rises where the Aztec capital once stood, and layers of Aztec, colonial and modern city crowd together around the great square of the Zócalo. Mild year-round and endlessly deep, it rewards travellers with grand plazas, leafy neighbourhoods and one of the richest food scenes anywhere.

The Zócalo is framed by the Metropolitan Cathedral and the excavated Aztec Templo Mayor, at the city’s ceremonial heart. The National Museum of Anthropology holds the treasures of Mexico’s ancient civilisations, and the neighbourhoods of Coyoacán and the Frida Kahlo house give a gentler day. The pyramids of Teotihuacan rise an hour outside the city, and the markets and taquerías are a draw in their own right.
