Overview
Two natural pools sit at the cliff edge above the larger formation, and the Zapotecs built irrigation canals from the same springs more than two thousand years ago, traces of which are still visible on the terraces. The site is on communal land, and access has been closed for extended periods by disputes between the two communities that manage it — in 2021 it was shut for over a year. It reopens and closes without much notice.
Highlights
Check that the site is open before setting out; local news and tour operators know, and the state tourism office is the reliable source. The trail down to the base of the formation takes forty minutes each way and gives the only view of the falls from below. Swimming in the pools is allowed and the water is around twenty-five degrees.
