Overview
Painted around 1511–1512 as part of the ceiling’s Genesis cycle, the panel shows God, borne by angels in a billowing mantle, extending his hand to a reclining, just-formed Adam.
Description
The whole composition hinges on the small gap between the two index fingers — the instant before life passes to Adam. Adam’s languid pose mirrors God’s energetic one, matching the human form to its creator.
History and legacy
The image has been endlessly reproduced and reinterpreted, from devotional prints to advertising, and the near-touching hands now stand for creation itself far beyond the chapel’s walls.
