Who they were
Victoria came to the throne at 18 and, with her husband Prince Albert, became a model of family monarchy. After Albert’s death in 1861 she withdrew into long mourning, but returned to public life and was proclaimed Empress of India in 1876. She reigned as a constitutional monarch while Parliament and prime ministers such as Gladstone and Disraeli governed.
What they did
She restored the prestige of a monarchy that had grown unpopular, redefining it as a symbol above party politics.
Legacy
The Victorian era became shorthand for an age of industry, empire, and strict social values. Victoria’s many descendants married across Europe’s royal houses, earning her the nickname ‘grandmother of Europe’.
