Key garments and style
Men wore an open-fronted long robe (entari) or kaftan over a long shirt, with a sash and a turban or cap; women wore colourful dress at home and a covering garment and veil out of doors. Fabric and embroidery marked rank.
Transition
In the 19th century, with Muhammad Ali’s modernisation, Western influence and the Turkish cap (tarboosh) appeared in dress.
