As part of the Islamic world, Egypt remained a great producer of linen and, later, cotton.

Key garments and style

Men wore a long tunic under a robe with a turban, and women a covering garment and veil. The tiraz — a decorative band woven with the caliph’s name or a blessing — was prized as a fine cloth granted by the ruler, while Coptic Christians kept some native styles.
