Fashion in Goryeo

Goryeo dress developed under a refined Buddhist aristocratic culture and, in its later period, took on Mongol (Yuan) influence; from around this time the jeogori gradually shortened.

Overview

Official dress kept a Chinese-style order, and fine ramie and silk textiles were used.

Key garments and style

After the royal house intermarried with the Yuan, Mongol styles entered court dress and hairstyles — while Goryeo styles were in turn favoured at the Yuan court as “Goryeo style.” The women’s jeogori began to shorten and its sash to be tied higher.

Transition

With the rise of Joseon, this trend crystallised, under a Confucian order, into the classic hanbok.
