Fashion in the Nguyen Dynasty

The Nguyen dynasty was the last, and the five-panel gown — a front-fastening long tunic worn over trousers — spread throughout the country; the ancestor of the áo dài, it formed a distinctly Vietnamese look together with the conical hat (nón lá).

Overview

Under the Nguyen, who unified the whole country, both court ceremonial and common dress were ordered.

Key garments and style

The court wore sumptuous silk ceremonial robes, rank shown by colour and pattern. People wore the front-buttoned five-panel long tunic over trousers with the conical nón lá, women with a breast-cloth (yếm) beneath; the northern women’s four-panel dress also continued.

Transition

In the French colonial period, this tunic was refined and reborn as the modern áo dài.
