Overview
The First Intermediate Period lasted from c. 2181 to c. 2055 BC. After the Old Kingdom collapsed, central authority fragmented across the 7th through 10th Dynasties, and provincial governors (nomarchs) ruled their districts with wide autonomy.
Key developments
Two rival power centers faced each other: Herakleopolis in the north, seat of the 9th and 10th Dynasties, and Thebes in the south, seat of the 11th. The era was once described as a dark age of chaos and famine — a picture colored by later literary laments — while modern scholarship also stresses flourishing provincial culture and wider access to elite burial customs.
End and transition
Around 2055 BC Mentuhotep II of Thebes defeated Herakleopolis and reunified Egypt, opening the Middle Kingdom.
