After the Arab conquest, Islamic robes and the turban layered over Iranian dress; but the Persian tailoring tradition — the open-fronted coat (qaba) and fine silk — was kept and influenced dress across the Islamic world.

Key garments and style

Men wore a long tunic under a robe with a turban. The open-fronted coat (qaba) of Persian origin was widely taken up across the Islamic world, and silk woven with inscribed bands (tiraz) was prized.

With the rise of the Turkic Seljuks, a Turco-Persian court dress developed.
