After the collapse of the Bronze Age civilisations, Dark Age dress returned to plain wool; in this period the later classical draped garment — the early, pinned peplos — began to appear.

With palace culture and writing lost, evidence for dress is scarce and comes mainly from Geometric-style figurines.

Key garments and style

People wrapped a rectangle of wool around the body and pinned it at the shoulder with a fibula — the ancestor of the Doric peplos. Tailoring receded and a simple wrapped-and-pinned garment became the basis.

Transition

In the Archaic period this draped garment was refined into the Doric and Ionic styles.
